Do Something!

We have a principle at Astonish Results. We say that people fail for one of two reasons: lack of knowledge OR lack of execution. I want to dig a bit deeper at the second reason, lack of execution.

Execution can be defined as "successful implementation of a strategy". For example, if we were cooking an omelet, there is a strategy to do so. Follow the recipe (strategy) by adding just the right ingredients in the correct amounts. The recipe for an omelet doesn't really change that much. If you follow the recipe, you'll enjoy a wonderful breakfast.

Now let me take this thought process and apply it to executing a digital marketing strategy. There are recipes (strategies) that exist. However, there is a significant difference between cooking an omelet and executing a marketing strategy. The digital marketing environment is constantly evolving. This is a fact that must not be ignored but embraced. The recipe is evolving. You cannot rely on only one digital marketing ingredient or tool. You must improvise; be flexible. You must test new combinations. P.S. Anyone who tells you they have this completely figured out is not telling you the truth. Each situation is different and unique.

This reality can sometimes paralyze agencies with the "paralysis of analysis". Some agencies do nothing because things aren't 100% clear on the strategy. Here's the secret: marketing is never 100% clear. So why is it that some agencies find success while others do not? The successful agencies DID something! They took calculated risks, even if it didn't make sense at the time. They learned as much from what didn't work from what did.

To be successful, you must DO SOMETHING! I noticed this trend in my real estate investing. I noticed that it usually wasn't the most intelligent people that made the best investment decisions or made the most money. The most successful investors were the ones that took the risk or acted quickly and tried something.

This brings me to my final point. I did have a slight advantage over the other real estate investors out there (which allowed me to retire in 2004). I had a mentor, someone with a great deal of experience investing in real estate. He helped me not to waste my money on poor investments, and he gave me new ideas and insights.
