Give Your Insurance Marketing A Booster Seat

Evolution in nature can’t be forced; however, evolution in an insurance agency can be.

The most recent Rough Notes eMarketing Agency of the Month article focuses on H.G. Holdam Insurance & Tax Accounting. It tells a story of evolution that agencies would be wise to pay attention to.

Heidi was also featured on Insurance Journal’s eMarketing Minute this month talking about how to jump in with both feet and change the culture of your agency from the inside out.

Heidi Holdam, owner of Florida-based H.G. Holdam Insurance & Tax Accounting, used to spend $70,000 a year on telephone directory advertising, but now quips, “No one uses those big yellow books anymore – except maybe as a booster seat.”

The evolution of going from a one-page color ad in the phone book to a multi-faceted digital strategy was a calculated risk. But Heidi understood the booster seat mentality and expected more from her marketing investment than just helping infants reach their plates at the table. She wanted an insurance marketing strategy that could reach people on many different levels, providing a booster seat for her book of business.

With a vision of what she wanted, Ms. Holdam sought to cut through the clutter of services and find a partner that could streamline all aspects of an online lead generation and marketing presence while positioning H.G. Holdam for current and future growth. Having already grown from a one-person independent agent to an agency of eleven employees, it was just a matter of time.

As one of Astonish Results’ first agency clients back in 2008, Heidi was admittedly nervous to drop the advertisements. Those fears were quickly pacified when the agency stopped “staying on track” and started growing – most recently achieving 20% growth in the last quarter leading up to the Rough Notes article.

Twenty years ago, Heidi Holdam started selling personal lines only. When she eventually moved into commercial lines, she found that she loved helping small businesses. This love compelled her to offer additional small business services in the form of payroll, accounting, and tax services which now make up about 65% of her business. Since the beginning, Heidi Holdam has run her agency with a constant “finger to the wind” guiding her marketing and business decisions and dictating the evolution of her company.

Too many agencies are paralyzed with a fear that changing business practices or the way they do marketing will sink them, when in reality, the opposite is true.
