Many of you have heard of John D. Rockefeller. This American industrialist founded Standard Oil in 1870 and is considered the first American worth more than one billion dollars. He literally revolutionized the petroleum industry and left a legacy of foundations in the areas of medicine, education, and scientific research.

First, he would ask about your agency’s priorities. He would ask you to clearly articulate your vision. Once he understood your vision, he would ask your staff how their priorities fit into the priorities he just heard from you.
Second, John D. would want to see some numbers. He’d ask for your daily operational metrics, knowing that these metrics provide deep insight into your organization. I’m sure he’d want to ask your staff for their metrics as well, asking, “How does this drive your performance?”
Lastly, this Titan would want to know your pattern of regular team meetings. As his company grew, he realized quickly the value of meeting on a regular basis in an effort to maintain accountability and alignment, communication and motivation among team members and the leaders.
What does all of this have to do with selling insurance? Principles are principles, and they work. Rockefeller didn’t become a billionaire by winging it.
